How to install VLC media player on macOS
Recently, I discovered that macOS’s built-in media player QuickTime that I use every day is not enough for me, because it can play not all video formats that I need. So I decided to install the VLC media player. In this article, I will show you how to install VLC media player on macOS :) Let’s begin.
Preamble
Recently I was needed the VLC media player, because it can play more video formats than macOS’s built-in media player QuickTime. For example, if you watch a movies downloaded from Torrent (I don’t, but many do) you may need to play a video in the MKV format. Also the WebM format by Google is becoming more common lately. In addition to these two formats I mentioned, there are many other formats that are less common but still come across in life. The VLC media player for macOS is not available in the AppStore, so we need to download it from the official website of the organization that created it. All we need to do to get the VLC installation file is go to the videolan.org
website, and download the DMG file to our Mac.
- A DMG file is a mountable disk image used to distribute software to the macOS operating system. Today, software developers typically build and distribute applications for macOS as DMG. In other words, DMG files are containers for apps on macOS.
Let’s begin
Installation of VLC media player is a really simple process. For this, we need to follow few simple steps. Now let’s get started :)
Follow the link to the VideoLAN website. VideoLAN is the organization that created VLC.
Click on the Download VLC
button to start downloading the VLC media player installation file. It will downloads directly to our “Downloads” folder as an DMG image file named vlc-3.0.11.1.dmg
.
Install the VLC media player using the vlc-3.0.11.1.dmg
file downloaded in the previous step. Double-click on the vlc-3.0.11.1.dmg
file to open it.
Drag the VLC.app
icon to the Applications folder to install it.
a) When done, close this small window called “VLC media player”.
b) In Finder, in the left side column find VLC media player
and click on the Eject
symbol to unmount the installation file vlc-3.0.11.1.dmg
.
Now you have installed the VLC media player.
Click on the VLC
icon to launch it, and when macOS ask you “Are you sure you want to open it?”, click on the Open
button.
